Anais Nin on God & Happiness

Anais Nin wrote that she does not believes that God made man to be happy because God want us to understand the divine purpose of our sorrows. “If He sends us sorrows, He did not intend for us to be happy. And there is sorrow even in our happiest moments.” I believe in the capitulating light of sorrows – only and always by retrospect and hindsight. Sorrow of the nows are always enraptured and enveloped in much much ugliness; in swollen eyes, red noses and in her immeasurable paroxysm of misery and pain. It beckons for prayers to Him, to heal away all that sadness. But then again, while re-acquainting yourself to that sadness, it no longer captures and afflicts you as before. It has become a mere smear; a stain of deep dark blue in that velvet rainbow-coloured blanket. Maybe, this is why God made sadness, if we had not the extreme polarity of the two and our logical faculty, how are we to appreciate the happiness we are granted with? We, like any false greedy man, would become contented and self-satisfied; fed with our own complacency. And then we will cease metamorphosing.

 I fear cessation.
