wandering galaxies
It never really ends, wandering. We daydream of the various and multiple possibilities that have been. We seek them to play God, to gain a certain semblance of certainty and control in our haphazard dull life; to feel interesting; to spice up whatever variants of our life. We conjure multiple worlds and parallel dimensions of what could be. I skirt around Romeo and Juliet and cry wolf at the superficiality of their romance (infatuation)? When I think of tragic love stories and romance, it is not the images of suicide and family bitterness that pains and tugs me but the tragedy of parallel lines, and lovers in parallel dimensions. I search for tragedy in science fiction because what could be more romantic and tragic than parallel lines, lovers stuck in multiple dimensions unable to meet?
The emotional appeal and catharsis of tragedy is in its mimesis of life and action. Or so as Aristotle says. I love(d) the idea of Shakespearean’s cosmic irony - the notion that fate toys with human hopes & expectations; indifferent to the individual lives of the men. When Doctor meets Rose at The End of The World, separated by a thin spatial-temporal wall, palm facing palm, heart syncing heart. Or when Murakami’s boy meets the 100% Perfect Girl in a perfect cherry blossomed falling day, failing to recognise her a decade later. Or when Platonic lovers transversed through different times and centuries to find their would-be half. That lamenting irony of believing themselves to be ideally fated such that even cruel Time and Fate could not tear the other. Well the joke is on them. Why throw away a gift and chance encounter in time to the hands of Fate?

Battling NYC
I still remember arriving here – bruising and blistering under the chill of an anticipating snow storm and January winter. The cold seeps in and it is criminal to batter and beat against the unforgiving gust of winter wind. Motoring through the Manhattan crowd and throe, I miss the clamminess and stickiness of the equatorial heat. Strange how everything feels so stretched and drawn in the liminal present, under the shivering cold, memories pulls out expansive and imagined. Mired in errands and the convexity of her subways and people, days and weeks bullet through and New York City is a world of its own – microcosms of worlds within worlds. There is so much to do but so little time and day light.
So much has happened during my short stay and all I want to do is to capture the potpourri of emotions and experience that have transpired but days are spent battling the winter cold, exhausted from the heavy drag and sag of trotting the concrete city as a overstuffed turkey - albeit snug and protected against the winter chill - and exhausted from the toil of a day’s work. We travelled through boroughs – from the one-way streets of Elmhurst to the grid locked, cookie cutter traffic of Manhattan to the grimy industrial dirt of Brooklyn – and transversed Times Square in its gaudy colourful Broadway lights, swirling and swiveling under its Billboard manufactured promises of dreams and city. In the concrete jungle, they say dreams happen if you believe in it. I want to believe in it as much as it may be a commercialized farce. Thankful for God’s graces faced through the people he places in my new life; thankful for everything that has transpired and for the warm sufficient nest that we are slowly building for ourselves. Thankful for the warm hot bowl of meatball pho, dumpling noodles and the people around.
P.S. Remember what you came to New York for. Remember what you want to make out of this city.

New Year
A new year beckons for a new state, a revolution in mind and body – or is that too much to ask for considering that transformations are successive, fragmented and gradual – and so goes the yesteryears of 2014 because what is 2014 and 2015 a mere second from each other, a heave amongst the congestion of soured alcoholic breaths and wasted dreams. I had watched the night flit into the New Year under the non-judgmental glow of God’s grace, clasped tight in M’s perfervid grasp. The pulsating warmth of his palms underlined the unsaid dolorousness and sacredness of the moment – fleeting, temporal and soon to pass. 2015 will be spent (almost) a year away from him and though not necessarily a bad thing for absence of the other offers (another) cocoon for spiritual and personal growth, the unfamiliarity would grew acute (how strange then that dismemberment from familiarity would fester loss). I am greedy by default – for memories especially so. It’s not real loss that frightens me but potential loss; more memories that could have been shared with friends and family. It infuriates me that there can only exist one of me, that it is impossible to be there with my siblings, with Pedro and family and friends and M, (while still having ounces of alone time) and that my temporal and spatial limitations fetters my desire. And so the frustration handicaps and frustrates me such that “maybe not meeting any would be better”. The last day of the old year was spent bidding farewell in the lassie fairze manner that was unbefitting of the torrential emotions/thoughts that brewed within. So much to say but so little conveyed.
Fine, as
all days could be named for a lack of better word, was the day in its
industrial grey, set amidst the susurrus of leaves, the harmonic soft trill of
birdsongs and rustling wind. Except there saw exceptional moments and memories
that would imprint strongly in the fleshed mind and would later on be easily
recalled with a lightning speed (Such was the way memory works). Prince’s limp
tail, Duke’s enthusiasm and the quiet softness of Snuffie eyes – so spirited,
so mellow, so unguarded and so human. The knowing glance, the subtle
understated concern and the unspoken words and beliefs – to take photographs
with M’s family as if I was part of their unit. So in the panoramic Flemish whirl
and swirl of mornings and nights and days, there saw abundant of spiced, hearty
food, endless carefree laughter suffusing across the walk between traffic
junctions, and bellies sated with warmth and companionship.
In 2014 I
have always felt the jarring sensation and acuteness that I might not have
dedicated as much time for myself – in journal-keeping, drawing, scrapbooking
and in reflecting. 2014 was a year without ma,
and “real” planning for days were busied in the idyllic present, without forethought
and real thought. 2014 was a year spent chasing for things that I may not
necessarily desire so. I still like
this, this feeling of solitude and deep reflection. 2014 taught me that people
are inherently good but that goodness is not interchangeable with selflessness;
for although selfless people are often good, the converse may not always and necessarily
be true. It taught me that as much as I
would like to believe that people can be changed, sometimes they remains as they are; that the fervent desire and idealism to change another is as dangerous as
the faults you believe you find in them. For the likely and tendentious faults
you called out may in fact as much reflect your own flawed self – and so patience
and real empathy/understanding is a virtue.
There were
untranslatable regret and remorse and acceptance; that football is a passé - gone
halcyon days of summer baked tans, and fake turf and tears and sweat and deep
loss. (And so loss becomes another motif) That the girl of eighteen whom fell
in love with the game was not merely in love with the game, but with the team and
philosophy. And that playing the sports (and improving oneself in the game) became
a desperate means to revive those clandestine, beat and surreal innocent
felicities of those days - spent together ripened under the scorched sun, under
the tenuous belief and want to better ourselves. It is different now. The unabashed and
pureness of the love is still strung underneath but the metaphors of adulthood
sours passion. Maybe one day I will return again but as of now, I have realized
that the self-berating criticisms and fanning politics is draining and that the
game no longer serves much impassioned exuberance but am riddled with politics.
The weekly affairs have saw me giving up much (time that could have been spent
with friends) (such that I may have gradually lose friends along the way due to
the unmatched timing) (time that could have been used for other means) but it
was an exercise of perseverance and character. And as much as it has shown me
thing, it has also revealed other qualities, priorities and ambitions that
resides within.
Looking
back and forward, on this year (2015) and this day: I promise that I will prioritize
what’s important in my life - and this requires an ongoing active process of reflection
and action - for it is highly romanticized and idealistic to engage in a Sylvia
Plath-like desire of living all shades and nuances of life.
In as much,
I am incredibly thankful to be able to grow as a person and would hope to grow
much more in the later years, in the like-mindedness of Christ.

Something from my messy archive of e journals
Reading past journals even though I am supposed to study for South Asian History finals. Sometimes, I am alarmed at the things I write because I don't know where they come from. They seem to come from a dark place.
June 2012:
"You know, I long to be a child again. To feel and look at life with that peculiar and curious intensity. To look at her, with that exuberance and to hold her, to cradle her as my friend, my companion. I don't know why, these tears are threatening to pour. That – exuberance, that merriment, that ecstasy, that moment. For it will pass as everything else will? That pain and emotion will no longer be the same. Each sensation is uniquely the interplay of time, character and memories. I can no longer feel the precision of my emotions as I did seconds ago. I could no longer revel in my childlike naiveté notions of art, beauty and the world."

of late, i have lost myself - in the wildest of all woods where all the beasts take misdirected steps, with all their breathe reeking of molten, slimy and unkind algae. but though their strides are wide, they just do not seem to pant. in the stillness of such dark where crickets stridulate and all other sounds more often than not misperceived, i can’t help but feel truly afraid what the next minute brings.. i ran along the stranded route against the gustling wind. and the lack of clarity showed: all i did was make rounds of turning back to where it all began. i’m still here, i still am - i wish i wasn’t though, i wish.

Of late, I have not been the best in following my quest. Distracted, I strayed off the path only to come stumbling back, caked in mud and dirt. The empty feeling of listless and restlessness lingers in the edges of my straying mind. Reading the disjointed and driven thoughts of my best friend has quivered my heart. I am afraid too. Fear drives me like a beast, unrestrained. For we tread the kingdom of beasts, distinguishing ourselves as different, as superiors to her citizens. But am I not a beast wearing a human painted face? For our salient difference between beasts and human lies in our thoughts. My human dignity springs from my shaky control of chaos and what am I when these thoughts disperse and leave me? Thumbing the pages of Pascal's Human Happiness, inadvertently sourcing for my meaning of happiness - does this act makes me more human than the animals? Or grasp of the abstract? I don't have the answers. "all i did was make rounds of turning back to where it all began. i’m still here, i still am - i wish i wasn't though, i wish."

1. That was supposed to be for my webcomic. But heck, I am going to scrap the project and start a comic journal instead.
2. Just sort of realized I journal a lot during the months of June to August. Been trawling through my box of journals. I stopped art journalling which is pretty sad. Hmm and these two months I haven't been very diligent when it comes to capturing my thoughts and in drawing. I need to organize them after my finals.
